Preparing Your Windows and Doors for Freezing Temperatures

As the temperature drops, it’s essential to ensure your home is ready to withstand winter’s icy grip. Properly maintaining your windows and doors can protect your home, improve energy efficiency, and prevent costly repairs. Here’s how to prepare your windows and doors for the winter months.

1. Lock Your Windows and Doors

Although this seems simple, it is an important task that is often overlooked.  Windows and doors perform at their best when they are in their locked position. So make sure that they are locked, not just closed.

2. Seal Drafts and Gaps

Drafts can cause significant heat loss, leading to higher energy bills. Inspect your windows and doors for gaps or cracks, especially around frames and sashes. Applying weatherstripping or caulk to seal these areas can help prevent cold air infiltration. An easy way to detect exterior air infiltration from is to safely guide a candle, or lighter around the perimeter of the frame and note where the flame flickers. A flicker means air is moving in from outside – which is a draft. For a quick, temporary fix on old drafty windows, use window insulation film, which adds a protective barrier and improves insulation.

3. Upgrade Window Treatments

Thermal-insulated curtains or cellular shades can help trap heat inside your home while keeping the cold out. These treatments are not only functional but also stylish, enhancing the overall comfort and design of your living spaces. 4. Check and Maintain Door Seals

Doors are often overlooked but can be significant sources of heat loss. Inspect door sweeps and seals to ensure they are intact. Replacing worn weatherstripping or adding a draft stopper at the bottom of your doors can make a noticeable difference in maintaining a warm indoor environment.

5. Clean Windows and Doors

Clean any sand, dirt or dust from door and window hinges, sills and tracks. Debris can jeopardize the tightness of the seal around your window & door. Clean with a mild cleanser and get a close up look at any potential window deterioration.

6. Prepare for Power Outages

Invest in a portable generator to ensure your home remains powered during severe weather events. Stock up on essentials such as batteries, flashlights, and warm blankets to stay safe and comfortable in case of emergencies.

By following these steps, you can winterize your home effectively, ensuring warmth, comfort, and peace of mind throughout the season.
